Overview of PCR

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a Nobel-prize-winning technology used to amplify, or copy, specific sequences of genetic material (called deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA). Using this technology, scientists can produce large enough quantities of DNA to be able to examine it in detail for a variety of different purposes, including:

  • Diagnosing specific genetic conditions or illnesses
  • Predicting how well an individual will respond to a medication
  • Identifying viruses
  • Connecting a specific suspect to a crime
  • Establishing maternity, paternity or other blood relationships
  • Determining the identity of a deceased person
